Teacher smashes record as she wins ultra marathon
An intrepid teacher swapped the classroom for the rugged Scottish countryside as she stormed to victory in just her second ultra marathon.
Fitness fanatic Lyndsay Cameron, who is the Principal teacher of Pastoral support at Gleniffer High, smashed the Glen Lyon Ultra Marathon course record by an amazing 14 minutes.
She completed the gruelling 31.5 mile course through some of the most remote parts of Perthshire in a fantastic 4 hours 49 minutes and 50 seconds.
Lyndsay said: “My aim was to achieve a top five female position but I knew there was greater potential if I managed to execute my race plan well. It was a very hot day so the conditions were quite tough.
“All in all it was a really memorable day for me and it was fantastic to achieve this result in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.”
It didn’t all go to plan on the day however, as at one point she found herself in a river.
She explained: “There are four or five river crossings on the course. About three weeks before the race I had done a recce of the course so I knew there was a bit with green moss beside one of the rivers which was slippy. And that’s where I fell in.”
Lyndsay, who is originally from Inverness, only took up running seriously five years ago but has been gripped by her new passion.
“I wasn’t really sporty and I never ran when I was younger but I got into it through friend. I have run four marathons, and last November I ran my first ultra Marathon at Glen Ogle,” she said.
“It has taken over my life a bit. I run six days a week and cover between 50 and 65 miles.”
But modest Lyndsay didn’t even tell her pupils she was taking on the challenge.
She said: “I’m not really like that. They know that I run, because they see me out an about in the local area but they don’t know that I take part in these races.”
Gleniffer High head teacher, David Nicholls said: “Congratulations to Lyndsay for this truly outstanding achievement. Lyndsay is a lady of real grit and determination and I am not surprised that she did so well in the race.”
