David and Amy sing the blues
Duo are chosen to represent Tories in June’s election
The To r i e s have announced their general election candidates for Renfrewshire as they look to build on gains at last week’s council polls.
David Gardiner has been announced as the party’s man in the Paisley and Renfrewshire North constituency, while Amy Thomson will stand for the Paisley and Renfrewshire South seat.
The pair will look to unseat the SNP duo of Gavin Newlands and Mhairi Black, who won the seats in 2015.
After picking up eight seats during last weeks Renfrewshire Council election the party will be hoping to continue that momentum into the Westminster elections on June 8.
David Gardiner, who was brought up in Houston, is a former Scotland Office civil servant and former deputy director for research for the winning Better Together campaign in the 2014 referendum.
He said: “I am delighted to be selected for my home constituency and pledge to be a strong local voice for Renfrewshire.
“Across Scotland, this election will be a clear fight between the SNP and the Scottish Conservatives.
“I look forward to campaigning throughout this constituency in the coming weeks and putting forward a clear message opposing another damaging and divisive independence referendum”.
And Amy Thomson is a human resources professional who has worked for the civil service and Deloitte.
She has also blasted proposals for a second Scottish Independence referendum saying it will detract from the business of running the country.
She added: “I am very pleased to be selected for Paisley and Renfrewshire South.
“A vote for the Scottish Conservatives in this constituency is a vote to prioritise our local economy and to reject the SNP’s drive towards another harmful independence referendum.”
The final list of candidates for the two Renfrewshire Westminster seats will be announced tomorrow afternoon.
The Liberal Democrats and the Scottish Labour Party are also expected to announce their candidates today.
Mhairi Black won the Paisley and Renfrewshire South from Labour’s Douglas Alexander with a majority of 5,684.
Her SNP colleague Gavin Nelwands is defending the Paisley and Renfreshire North seat, which he won with a majority of 9,076 over Labour’s Jim Sheridan.
