Glasgow Airport passenger numbers on a high
Holidaymakers have helped Glasgow Airport passenger numbers soar to a record high.
Terminal bosses revealed 786,000 travellers passed through last month, topping all previous figures for the period.
An almost 20 per cent boost in international traffic ensured the jet hub recorded its 50th consecutive month of growth.
Scottish finance secretary Derek Mackay hailed the statistics, which he insists are significant for the entire region.
He said: “It is encouraging to see passenger numbers growing at Glasgow Airport yet again in what has been a very successful couple of years.
“In a time of economic pressures, maintaining passenger numbers can be a challenge and this new increase in is testament to the hard work of all the staff.
“Glasgow Airport is going from strengt -to-strength which is good news for the whole of Renfrewshire.
“It is a vital part of the local economy and any increase in passenger numbers has a positive knock-on effect throughout the area.”
Bosses told how families travelling for the Easter holidays boosted trade, with airlines adding extra capacity to meet demand.
And they say there is growing demand for new routes to Valencia, Spain; Palanga, in Lithuania; and the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.
The figures represent an 8.9 per cent jump in passenger numbers from April last year.
Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, says fresh link-ups with global cities are planned.
She said: “Both American Airlines and WestJet will return later this month and we also welcome Delta Air Lines to Glasgow for the first time when its inaugural service to New York-JFK takes off on May 26.
“Not only do these routes play a hugely important role in strengthening our links with North America they will also help generate significant inbound tourism for Glasgow and Scotland, particularly at a time when the current exchange rate favours the dollar.”
