New children’s group is a gem of a project
Wee Diamonds club opens to kids in Ferguslie Park
A fun, free group for primary school pupils in Ferguslie Park has been launched.
The new Wee Diamonds group, run by the Communities that Care project – which is part of the charity Who Cares? Scotland – has been a big hit with youngsters so far.
The charity works with young people from a variety of backgrounds, including those in residential care, foster care, kinship care (living with a relative who is not mum or dad), and those looked after at home (living at home with mum or dad, but get support from a social worker).
The new group, which runs at the Tannahill Centre in Ferguslie Park every two weeks, is open to children of primary school age, to come together to do fun arts and crafts, play games, to chat and to share experiences.
Fun projects have included making Easter bonnets and wooden spoons in the likeness of someone in their life who is important to them.
Julie McTaggart, project manager for Who Cares? Scotland’s Communities That Care in Paisley, said: “We asked the boys and girls what they wanted to call the group, and they chose ‘Wee Diamonds’ themselves, which is great because that’s exactly what they are; the wee precious diamonds in our community.”
“It’s a fantastic new group, just very informal and a place to come together to have fun.
“So far they have been enjoying just relaxing playing games, getting to know each other and doing arts and crafts, and over the next few weeks we have a visit planned by the local police, and even a trip out to Castle Semple to try out different water sports.”
“If you know any more children around Ferguslie Park who would be interested in coming along to Wee Diamonds, please just get in touch with us by emailing renfrewshire@whocaresscotland.org.”
Communities That Care is a project which aims to make Renfrewshire the best place in Scotland for care experienced children and young people to grow up.
They do this by working with local volunteers, community groups, organisations, care professionals and community leaders across Renfrewshire to educate them on what life in care is like, and what they can do to make a difference.
