Council chiefs’ wages revealed

Salaries for new Renfrewshire Council administration

- Chris Taylor

Renfrewshire Council chiefs’ salaries have been revealed after a new administration was voted in.

The leader will pocket around £34,000, with the member appointed Provost earning in the region of £25,500.

SNP boss Iain Nicolson is likely to take the top job, after his party swept back to power in Renfrewshire.

The civic head post will be filled after a ballot of elected members.

A report due before the first summit of the newly elected council on Thursday sets out the terms for pay.

It stated: “The council must decide which elected member is to be the leader for remuneration purposes.

“The regulations give local authorities the discretion to pay to a civic head.

“It should be noted that the leader of the council and the civic head cannot be the same person.

“The remuneration regulations give local authorities the option to pay either every calendar month or every four weeks.

“Renfrewshire Council employees are paid every four weeks and it would be consistent if remuneration for elected members continued to be paid at the same intervals.

“It is also proposed to follow guidance issued by the Scottish Government that payment should be in arrears.”

A budget of almost £ 300,000 has been put aside to pay for up to 14 senior councillors.

They could each earn between £ 16,927 – the salary for a regular member – and £25,392.

The local authority can pay each of these members different amounts or around £21,160 equally.

The SNP is now the biggest party in the region, with 19 councillors elected at last week’s ballot.

Labour, which had controlled the local authority for the last five years, took heavy losses, dropping nine seats to just 13.

The Conservatives have eight councillors, up from one in the previous administration, with two independents and a single Liberal Democrat.
