Mallan on verge of English deal
Saints said to want £300,000 for star
St Mirren ace Stevie Mallan is on the verge of sealing a move to English Championship side Barnsley.
Express Sport understands that a fee is yet to be agreed between the two clubs, with St Mirren believed to looking for in the region of £300,000 for the Scotland under-21 international.
But in anticipation of an agreement being struck, Mallan will be travelling to Oakwell today for a medical and a look around the facilities that Paul Heckingbottom’s side have to offer.
All going well, a deal could be finalised within the next 24 hours.
The bid comes after extensive interest from the Yorkshire side during the January transfer window.
Mallan had looked to be on his way out prior to the Scottish Cup win over Dundee. The move collapsed, however, leaving him to remain at the club until the end of the season.
Mallan would go on to play a starring role in the Paisley side’s revival as they came back late in the day to avoid relegation.
The majority of his 11 goals over the course of the season came following the breakdown of the move south, with crucial strikes coming in wins over the likes of Dundee United, Morton and Ayr United.
And his hat-trick against Raith Rovers on the penultimate weekend of the season proved to be pivotal as the Saints leapfrogged Raith out of the play-off positions, with just one round of fixtures to play.
Raith wound up being relegated at the weekend, following defeat to Brechin City in the play-off semifinals.
The departure of Mallan, who still has one year left on his Saints contract, will come as a blow to manager Jack Ross.
Ross remains in the process of tying down a number of players ahead of next season, with talks expected to continue into this week.
So far, defenders Adam Eckersley and Jack Baird have both extended their deals, with more set to follow in their footsteps.
