Time to clear the air
I am writing in to share my concerns about Renfrewshire Council being possibly the greatest polluter of air quality in the area due to unnecessary vehicle idling.
I constantly witness various vehicles idling at the expense of taxpayers and the environment, vehicles include buses, trucks, bin lorries, vans and cars, mostly diesel, the worst polluters.
These include contracted bus companies which run older vehicles with even more pollution.
There is no consideration for the clients who use/need these various services, who include vulnerable people with complex medical needs, asthma, school children etc.
I find it unacceptable considering that the council has a duty of care to all service users. Name and address supplied
Balanceofpower
As a society, we should support our police.
Last week, the Paisley Daily Express highlighted some of the difficult experiences our police have had to deal with.
However, I agree with many that there must be a cautious counterbalance about our safety and the new stop-and-search powers.
We all have different experiences, but I know of a young woman aged 16 who was stopped and searched as it was believed she was carrying drugs.
The justification given was that she had a tie-dye badge – something that many young people have.
Of course, although shocked, she gave permission and was found to have no drugs. She never has broken any law. This took place under the old legislation.
The police and others are correct in ensuring their duty of care, not only to wider society but the individuals who are stopped and searched.
There is evidence of multiple srarches of the same individuals. The question must be asked why. With greater powers comes greater responsibilities.
We hope this will be the case. Sandra Webster Renfrewshire Branch Scottish Socialist Party.
