Bus stop upgrade stops traffic in centre of Paisley

Drivers and commuters face town centre delays

- Kenneth Speirs

17.05.2017 Commuters faced long delays yesterday morning as one of Paisley town centre’s main streets was shut off.

Part of Gauze Street was closed as workmen carried out upgrading work to bus stops.

Traffic tailed back along Glasgow Road as far as its junction with Arkleston and Hawkhead Roads as a result.

Vehicles heading for the town centre were diverted along Mill Street to its junction with Gordon Street, then onto Bridge Street, past Paisley Abbey, along Cotton Street, and up to Paisley Cross where normal traffic flow was in place.

One commuter from Glasgow, who was travelling on a No 38 McGill’s bus into Paisley, said there was a significant delay to his journey because of the partial closure of Gauze Street.

“I wasn’t aware there was to be a closure of Gauze Street so I didn’t set off any earlier for work,” he said.

“It was only when I heard the bus driver explaining to people that there would be a diversion that I realised there could be problems. Then when we got to the bottom of Barshaw Park at Hawkhead Road I could see there was quite a jam of traffic ahead.

“It was pretty much start and stop all the way until we got into Mill Street. I usually arrive into work in plenty of time, but this time I was five minutes late.”

A spokesman for Renfrewshire Council confirmed that upgrading work was being carried out at bus stops in Gauze Street, starting yesterday.

A Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “Gauze Street is currently closed from Cotton Street to Mill Street for bus stop improvement works. The works are part of a scheme for Paisley town centre to provide waiting spaces for buses. A diversion is in place and emergency access is available. It is anticipated the section of the road will re-open on Thursday, May 18.”
