SYRINGE YOB NABBED

Police hailed for swift, efficient arrest

- Gavin McInally

An out- of- control yob threatened cops with a syringe after abusing staff at a health centre.

Cops were called to Renfrew Health Centre, in Ferry Road, at around 4pm on Tuesday after an “intimidating” man had started causing trouble at the reception.

Worried staff were unable to calm him down and when officers arrived the yob became even more aggressive. He pulled a syringe from his pocket and brandished it at the officers before legging it towards the town centre.

Police back up was called in as cops chased the man on foot for over a mile before he was rugby tackled to the ground in Robertson Park.

Chief Inspector Simon Wright, who is based in Johnstone, was delighted with the way his officers handled the situation.

He said: “Thanks to the great work of the officers who attended the disturbance at Renfrew Health Centre, it was resolved without anyone being injured.

“The officers had to pursue this man on foot for a considerable distance and there would have been a significant amount of police activity in the town at that time, so it was important to apprehended the suspect without anyone being injured.”

One woman, who was at Renfrew Health Centre when the drama unfolded, also heaped praise on the officers.

She said: “I was leaving the health centre at the time the police arrived. The man in question was very intimidating. Well done to those officers involved.”

A Police Scotland spokesman last night said a 32-year-old man was due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court in connection with public disorder charges.
