He swore at staff and punched a cop in row over keys

- Ron Moore

A tanked- up yob sparked mayhem at Paisley’s accident and emergency department – because he lost his house keys.

Lout Paul Wilson, 25, swore and shouted at staff, punched a police officer and lashed out wildly with his arms and legs as was he being placed under arrest, at the busy hospital.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard yesterday that Wilson lost the plot after a drinking session with pals, where one of his accomplices had suffered an injury and had been taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The accused discovered his friend had mistakenly taken his house keys and was with the police and medical staff at the hospital receiving treatment, when Wilson, of Tannahill Terrace in the town’s Ferguslie Park district, burst into the waiting room looking for him.

Fiscal depute Eoin McGinty said: “The accused attended the A&E looking for another person.

“The police were with that other person, who was awaiting triage.

“The accused inquired about the whereabouts of this person, who was in the company of police.

“Police informed the accused the other person was being assessed and was not in a position to speak to him.

“The accused began shouting and swearing such things as, ‘Better tell him no’ to come back to ma f****** hoose,’ and ‘He’s a f****** liar.’

“The accused was asked to leave by police. Officers summoned other police to assist, should there be any further problems.

“He returned and was once again asked to leave by hospital staff and police but refused to do so, causing a disturbance in the hospital reception area.”

The fiscal added that other police arrived when Wilson kicked off.

He said: “He was being informed he was being placed under arrest and he began resisting. He punched out his arms and attempted to run out the hospital entrance.

“When officers were detaining him, to take him down to the floor, he then punched out hitting one of the officers in the face.”

Wilson appeared for sentencing yesterday after pleading guilty to charges of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner likely to cause fear and alarm, shouting and swearing, and refusing to desist, and refusing to leave, when asked by police and hospital staff to do so.

He also pleaded guilty to assaulting a police constable during the execution of his duty by punching him on the head.

He also admitted charges of obstructing, hindering and resisting officers engaged in their duties, and struggling violently and lunging out with his arms and legs repeatedly to impede his arrest.

Defence agent Tony Callahan said: “He had been having a drink at his own home with two pals when an incident occurred which required one of his pals to be taken to hospital.

“He continued drinking with his other pal when he found out the other person had taken his house keys. He accepts his behaviour is completely unacceptable.

“The second time he was talking to police, he thought they were bringing his house keys and he reacted in his drunken condition, a matter he very much regrets.”

Sheriff David Pender deferred sentence.
