New role for ex-Buddie Millen

-

Former St Mirren ace Andy Millen will leave his role as Morton development coach this summer.

Millen, who served the Paisley club for four years between 2004 and 2008, arrived at the Saints as a player/ assistant manager under Gus MacPherson.

The pair struck up a partnership as the Buddies progressed up the leagues.

After hanging up his boots, Millen remained as MacPherson’s right hand man for a further two seasons at the helm.

Upon leaving St Mirren, he and his former boss teamed back up at Queen of the South before pulling on his boots once again at Queen’s Park for a short spell.

Millen has worked with Morton as a youth coach since May 2015, and has played a pivotal role in developing young talents, including Jai Quitongo and former St Mirren kid Jamie McGowan.

But Millen has revealed he is set to head back up the leagues as he prepares to move to a new club.

He said:“This is an opportunity to work at the same age group at a higher league.

“But it certainly wasn’t an easy decision and, first and foremost, I would like to thank Derek Anderson, Jim Duffy, and Warren Hawke for giving me the opportunity.

“In the two years I was there as development coach, I was fortunate to be at a club that is certainly going forward and to be inside it and see how the manager works. Even at 51, and with the time I’ve been in the game, I’ve learned from Jim Duffy.

“Whoever takes over the job at Morton is going to a club whose youth policy has progressed and a manager that is willing to give boys an opportunity.”

A club spokesman added:“We would like to thank Andy for his considerable efforts during his two seasons at the club and wish him all the very best in his future role.”
