Second XI enjoy great day of play

- Craig Ritchie

No first XI cricket was possible on Saturday at Ferguslie as the rain poured down in Paisley.

However, the second XI managed to secure a victory in Prestwick, defeating St Ninians by seven wickets in a one-sided affair.

Martin McAllister returned figures of five wickets for 22 and Dean Kennedy took four wickets for 35 runs.

In reply, Meikleriggs took 20 overs to chase it down, with Brian Shaw top scoring with 23. Two wins out of three is a good start to the season and provides a platform to build on.

On to Sunday, and the first XI travelled to the capital to take on ESCA Division One side Marchmont in the first round of the Scottish Cup after Marchmont defeated Glasgow Accies in the preliminary round to set up the tie.

Jamey Carruthers won the toss and chose to bat first. The batsmen took the game by the scruff off the neck, amassing a massive 328 for six from their 50 overs. An excellent century from Riyaad Henry, and 50s from David Stafford and Gregor Preston-Jones set the tone for the day.

In reply, the game petered out very quickly.

Two early wickets from Carruthers and tight bowling from Henry left the hosts 16/2 after 10 overs and the game was virtually over.

From here, the opportunity was given to a variety of bowlers to have a bowl in a game situation. Jimmy Holt, getting his first bowl of the season, provided another good option for the forthcoming games.

Liam Hard, Marchmont’s overseas amateur, batted nicely for a half century but then became Carruthers’ third victim of the day. Lucas Farndale also picked up three wickets, Michael English took two before a run out for Jamie Cook and Haroon Tahir taking the final wicket to wrap up a convincing 166 run victory in the 46th over. ● Ferguslie have now been drawn at home to Poloc in the second round on May 28.
