Popular trolley dash is back after eight-year absence

- Lynn Jolly

A fun- filled trolley dash will take place in Paisley to raise cash for a cancer charity.

Pub bosses and punters in and around the town are wellknown for their generosity and for backing good causes.

And the Maggie’s Trolley Dash is making a comeback in County Square on Sunday, May 28 after eight years to bring in funds for Maggie’s Centres.

Bars involved include the Bull Inn, Hamishes’ Hoose, the Abbey Inn, Burger and Keg, Kennedy’s, The Bankhouse and the Old Swan Inn.

Jacqueline McCaig, who runs the Old Swan Inn and is Paisley Pubwatch boss, said: “We will supply the trollies.

“All people need to do is get dressed up in fancy dress and pledge to raise £100 for Maggie’s.

“The route goes from The Bankhouse in County Square to the Bank of Scotland and back again in three heats.”

Jacqueline and her customers have been raising money for Maggie’s for years after late customer Craig Mackie’s wife Catherine passed away from lung cancer.

Jacqueline explained: “We support Maggie’s because they looked after Catherine and supported the family.

“Nine years ago, Craig came up with the idea of doing a fundraiser and my mum Lorraine took it further with the trolley dash.”

Ahead of the eventthere will be Music For Maggie’s gigs in the Old Swan Inn

On Friday, May 26, from 8pm, there will be live music and entry is free. Then on the Saturday, from 2pm, you can enjoy 10 bands — playing in the pub and in the beer garden — from 2pm for a £2 donation at the door.

There will also be collection buckets doing the rounds and staff will gratefully accept any donations for Maggie’s.

Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks.

Built in the grounds of NHS cancer hospitals, Maggie’s Cent res are places with professional staff on hand to offer the support people need.

The closest cent re to Renfrewshire is Maggie’s Glasgow at Gartnavel General Hospital. You can find out more at www. maggiescentres.org

The dash will start in County Square at 2pm.
