Duo’s 5k raises cash for heart research

- Alison Rennie

A fundraising mum and daughter duo pulled on their running shoes to help a charity close to their hearts.

Debra Brogan, from Erskine, signed up to the Subway Helping Hearts Family 5k Fun Run with her seven-year-old daughter Faith.

The race took place in Bellahouston Park last weekend and was the first time it’s been held in Glasgow, with 1,250 runners taking part.

All money raised from the event will go to Heart Research UK — a charity which Debra was keen to support.

In 1996, when she was in high school, her grandfather Jimmy McNeil passed away from a stroke after previously suffering three heart attacks.

And her sister- in- law’s father Martin Stirling died suddenly from heart disease aged 52, despite showing no signs of heart problems.

Debra, who is a banking consultant and hypnobirthing practitioner, said: “The fact the race was for Heart Research UK was a big plus for us doing it.

“I’m looking for ways to get my daughter out and about and she’s done a few 5ks now.

“She was the one pulling me around the course on Saturday.”

As well as taking part in this year’s race, Debra, 38, her husband Jonathan and St John Bosco pupil Faith, also competed in the Edinburgh Helping Hearts race last year.

All sponsorship money raised funds Heart Research UK and Subway’s Healthy Heart grant scheme, an initiative providing up to £ 10,000 each to projects throughout the UK which actively promote heart health in the community.

Sacha Clark, from Subway, said: “We are delighted that the Subway Helping Hearts Family 5K Fun Run series has come to Glasgow for the first time.

“The Subway brand is committed to encouraging a healthy lifestyle and the series provides a great way for families to get fit and active together.”

Barbara Harpham, chief executive of Heart Research UK, added: “As they cross the finish line, everyone who has taken part will know that they will be helping hearts in the Glasgow region.

“The money raised will pay for community-based Healthy Heart Grants that encourage people across the region to live more active lifestyles.

“Heart Research UK, the Subway brand and all the runners, together, are helping people to live healthier, happier, longer lives.”
