Lout terrorised his own father

Sheriff blasts yob’s criminal record

- Chris Taylor

A thug smirked and shook his head after he dodged a jail stretch for racking up 30 convictions for abusive behaviour.

Steven Cartwright, 31, kicked off at his dad for not giving him a lift in his car, fuming: “you better watch your back”.

He admitted threatening his father and bawling foul-mouthed rants as he was sentenced at Paisley Sheriff Court.

But, despite his appalling record, the yob was fined just £250.

Fiscal depute John Penman told how Cartwright became aggressive after a lift home fell through.

He said: “The accused’s father was at home with his grandchildren, aged seven months and 17 months.

“There was an agreement for him to collect his son, but this collapsed and seems to be the catalyst.

“On entering, he said to his father, ‘I’m f*****g home’ and continued to be abusive, shouting and swearing.

“He was told to calm down, but his behaviour continued to the point he began shouting, ‘you better watch your back’.”

The court heard his father — also Steven Cartwright — “had enough” and called police, who found the lout still at the family home in Station Road, Kilbarchan.

Cartwright showed no remorse from the dock and smiled and huffed as the details of the row were read.

Defence lawyer David Nicholson insisted the fall- out had been sparked by tension in the “family setting”.

He said: “He has spent 30 days in custody for this matter.”

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew slammed him for causing the drama last October 29.

He said: “On one view, the public disorder is not the worst I am going to hear.

“But you know and I know, your record for public disorder is very poor.

“No matter how much you were having difficulties with family, you cannot behave like this.

“The good news, is I am not going to send you to custody.”
