Act now before someone is killed
Dad urges council bosses to curb speeding drivers
A worried dad is calling on council bosses to act now before someone is killed by speeding drivers on a busy road.
David Lock, 36, say s Renfrewshire Council has failed to act on his warning about Paisley’s Donaldswood Road, which he claims has become a rat- run for vehicles being driven well in excess of the 30mph limit.
He fumed: “I’ve been complaining to the council about the speed of vehicles on Donaldswood Road in Paisley for over a year, and no direct action has been taken.
“I have been fobbed off by a member of staff for months and then I contacted Labour councillor Eddie Devine.
“He seemed genuinely concerned but little has happened and the road is still dangerous.
“Just about all surrounding roads have speed bumps and/or speed cameras, so Donaldswood Road is used as a high-speed shortcut.
“Only last night a van passed me travelling at an estimated 60mph when I was walking along with my two young children.”
Council bosses set up cameras last winter to monitor the situation but told Mr Lock afterwards that there was no need for traffic calming measures, he claims. “I totally disagree,” he said. “This is a serious safety issue. “I am not exaggerating when I say some cars have been doing at least 60mph.
“St Peter’s Primary and an old folks’ home are nearby. “And it’s just getting out of hand. “Do I want to drive over speed bumps every day? No.
“But I care about the people in my area.”
Councillor Eddie Devine said that action must be taken if vehicles are speeding along Donaldswood Road.
“The council put in speedmeasuring equipment but it was just for about three or four days, and I was not happy with that,” he added.
“So, I’ve spoken to the department and they have agreed put in the equipment for at least a week.”
Mr Devine added, however, that there was high demand from communities for the equipment, and so no date for installation has yet been set.
A Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “Following concerns raised by a local resident, a speed survey using driver feedback signs was conducted on Donaldswood Road for seven days in February 2017.
“The survey showed the average speed by motorists was within the speed limit and its findings were shared with the local resident.
“The safety of pedestrians and all road users is paramount and we have notified Police Scotland of the concerns.”
