Let’s raise a glass

There has been much talk of Paisley’s nightlife being part of the regeneration of our town.

I remember my younger days when people came from all over the west of Scotland for a night out in Paisley.

But because of silly decisions made by licensing chiefs in the 1990s, and a change in drinking habits, the market has changed.

But I feel that over the past couple of years there has been a revival in the hospitality trade in Paisley.

We have fantastic venues like Saporito wine bar and its High Street diner, and let’s not forget Burger and Keg in Gilmour Street.

There are also established businesses like Hamishes’ Hoose, The Old Swan Inn, The Bank House and Gabriel’s all serving our town centre with great food and entertainment.

In New Street we now have a choice of the traditional – like the Bull Inn – or the more modern, like Kilty Kilty.

There really is something for everyone in Paisley now and I can’t remember the last time Stacey went out when she wasn’t in Paisley.

The Purple Flag status that was gained on February 8 this year will also help towards boosting our nightlife.

Since 2007, Purple Flag status has been awarded to 65 towns throughout the UK and Ireland, and has been credited with an increase in footfall and decrease in antisocial behaviour.

Areas that are awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant mix of dining, entertainment and culture.

This all looks good for the future of Paisley’s nightlife as it helps to increase footfall in the town and gives us an opportunity to showcase our town to visitors.

Last week I had a meeting in the Scottish Parliament with representatives from Punch Taverns, who own a number of licensed premises locally.

They informed me that the Wee Howf – a very respected and much-loved pub in Paisley – will be reopening in June under new management and with a wee overhaul.

They assured me they would retain the charm and character of the pub, while modernising some of it.

So I was delighted when they asked me to officially open it for them.

So all I say is go out and enjoy Paisley’s nightlife. Drink sensibly and sample the vast choices available to you – and if you’ve not been out and about in our town recently then now is the time to do so.
