Boozy nurse drove away from party to escape danger

Cops were waiting when she got home

An auxiliary nurse was arrested for drink- driving after leaving a party – where she had been assaulted – and getting behind the wheel of her car.

Adele Campbell jumped into her Audi to get away from people who threatened to damage the motor.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard that when she left the party someone at the house called the police to alert them to her drink-driving.

Officers were then waiting in her street when she arrived home to Greenock Road, Inchinnan, on July 17 last year. When cops spoke to Campbell they detected the smell of alcohol and noted that her speech was slurred.

A breath test was positive, with a reading of 35 micrograms of alcohol when the he legal limit is 22 mg of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

When she appeared in the dock, Campbell, who already had three penalty points on her licence for speeding, pleaded guilty to committing the offence.

Her defence agent Gordon Nicol told the court his client had been at another house when an incident arose that caused her to leave.

Mr Nicol explained: “She was attacked and there were threats made to damage the vehicle. She had to vacate and felt she had to get the car away from the scene as quickly as she was able.

“Someone at that property then alerted police and they were looking for the vehicle. She thought that she had justification for driving.”

Sheriff Seith Ireland said that, given the circumstances outlined, he was prepared to allow the 31-yearold to take part in the drink-drive rehabilitation scheme.

If completed successfully, it will allow her to get her licence back within nine months of the one-year disqualification period.

He also imposed a £380 fine to be paid at £10 per week.
