Wheelers deliver fast show in tough Dunlop Road Race

Johnstone cyclists produce solid performance despite strong wind

- Craig Ritchie

Johnstone Wheelers cyclists were in the thick of the action as they tackled the recent Dunlop Road Race.

Strong winds made conditions difficult for all the riders who turned out for the 60-mile road race, part of the Scottish South West Road Series Race, was organised by Dunlop Cycle Club and Fastrider Cycles.

After the heavy rain of Saturday, the sun was shining but a punishing wind made the going hard between Lugton and Torranyard. Wheelers’ Alan McLean was in fine form to battle both his rivals and the elements to finish just outside of the top 20 over the six-lap course.

McLean finished the day in overall 22nd place, five places ahead of clubmate Paul McDonald who produced a solid performance to end the day in 27th spot.

The winning trio of Robert Friel (Pro Vision Scotland), Kevin Barclay (Spokes Racing Team) and Euan Sutherland (Glasgow Cycle Team) split from the main group on the opening circuit and, despite some good riding behind them, the chasers remained in smaller groups that could not catch the breakaway.
