All down to Ross

Defender praises gaffer

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren defender Jack Baird insists his manager has been the turning point in his career.

Baird, who penned a new contract, credited Jack Ross for seeing his game improve since the turn of the year. An injury to Harry Davis saw Baird nail down a starting spot in the side over the course of the run in to the end of the campaign, with many impressed by his displays.

But Baird claims it is all down to the hard work of his boss and assistant manager James Fowler which has seen him come on leaps and bounds in recent months.

Baird said: “He’s made a massive difference to the team and me personally. I feel like I have improved as a player since he and James Fowler have come in. The two of them have made a massive difference.”

And looking back over the course of the campaign, Baird revealed that he was always confident of avoiding the drop. A draw with Hibernian on the final game of the season proved to be enough, and he says that it was a credit to the side that they managed to pull off survival.

He added: “As soon as that whistle went, it was more relief than celebration and a big weight off our shoulders.

“You’re feeling a lot of pressure.

“When it’s happening it’s a very stressful time.

“But when you look back at it you’ll struggle to find a better feeling than coming from the position we were to the position we finished in.

“We were always quite quietly confident. We have players that can win you a match at any time and that’s key. We were never going to doubt ourselves because we had a good squad.”
