Ross: only the best will do

Gaffer wants players with great potential

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren manager Jack Ross insists he is spreading the net far and wide in a bid to find the best players available to the club.

Ross is currently working his way through a host of targets as preparations for next season get well under way.

Adam Eckersley, Jack Baird, Gary MacKenzie and Cammy Smith have all committed themselves to the side for next season, while Jamie Langfield has also penned a new oneyear contract with the view to focusing more on goalkeeper coaching.

Ross has been out and about the grounds in recent weeks to have a closer look at a number of players that have caught his eye.

And having recently taken in a number of matches down the leagues, Ross revealed he would have no issues with handing players the chance to step up to the Championship.

Ross told Express Sport : “There are several players in League One who I think are good players and could step up to the Championship.

“I want to identify two or three that could come in and help our squad, who are hungry and want to progress up the levels again.

“We have some really good quality in this squad, some experienced proven quality.

“I can add to that again but equally I would like to bring in two or three that have good potential that we can help grow and develop and be good for us as well.

“I’ve been working on that as well, but James and I have been out watching a lot of games over the course of the season so we have always had players in mind.

“It is now a case of them choosing what they can do next and in terms of what we can offer them because we are working within our own parameters as well.”

Meanwhile, Ross says that plans are already in place for pre-season as he bids to get the squad hitting the ground running.

With the League Cup group section coming into play for the second year of the competition, the Saints boss reckons his side will be in perfect shape come the first game of the season.

He added: “I hope to get everything in place sooner rather than later and we are constantly working to get everything organised.

“We have a few friendlies lined up and plans for training have been in place for a while.”
