Our girls get set for the Asian invasion Ex-Saints starlets head for Malaysian tourney
A host of former St Mirren basketball starlets are set for a Asian adventure later this summer.
The likes of Robyn Lewis and Sarah Thomson, who both now play for WBBL side Caledonia Pride, are set to be named in the Scotland senior women’s side that will travel to Malaysia for the international test tournament hosted by the Malaysian Federation.
The tournament will take place in Kuala Lumpur between June 13 and 17.
The Scotland side will go headto- head with the hosts, as well as two regional teams from China and another two regional teams from Taiwan.
The team’s trip to Asia will play a pivotal part in the Senior Women’s preparations for next year’s Commonwealth Games which will take place on the Gold Coast, Australia.
Women’s national performance coach, Bart Sengers, is excited about his side’s upcoming trip and believes it will be a good test for his team.
He said: “This is a great opportunity for our team to compete internationally.
“Trips like this always help to bring a team together and it will be a great test for all of the players that are selected.
“We’re excited to start camp later this week with all eyes on securing qualification for next year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.”
Barry Lang, the head of basketball at basketballscotland, added: “We’re delighted to be sending our women’s team to Malaysia for this tournament.
“The team at basketballscotland has been working hard in the background to secure competitive games for both our men’s and women’s programmes and this will be a really exciting opportunity for those players.”
A full tournament schedule for the Senior Women’s trip to Malaysia will be issued in due course and a list of players entering the team’s training camp will be released shortly.
