Trail of chaos leads to cannabis farm find

Attack probe cops unearth drug cultivation in flat

- Gavin McInally

Cops investigating a latenight attack stumbled upon a cannabis farm as chaos broke out in the street.

The officers, who received reports of a man being hit with a plant pot in a boozy rammy, ended up probing a series of crimes in a bizarre turn of events.

As they responded to the initial attack in Springbank Road, in the Shortroods area of Paisley, another injured man appeared from a nearby close with blood gushing from his head.

And as unsuspecting officers tried to establish what had happened to the two injured men, a blood trail led them to a cannabis cultivation in a flat.

The drama unfolded shortly after midnight on Friday and led to cops swarming on the street.

A neighbour told the Paisley Daily Express: “It all started with a row in a garden with some folk who had been drinking in the sun all day and apparently had had one too many.

“A woman chucked a plant pot at a guy which left him with quite a nasty looking injury to his arm and the cops were called.

“While they were trying to deal with that, another guy appeared in the street who looked as if he’d been battered because he had cuts across his head and was covered in blood. It didn’t look like the two attacks had anything to do with each other. The police were just in the right place at the right time to deal with it.

“Then more cops showed up after a flat was searched in the street, so it all escalated pretty quickly.”

Chief Inspector Mar t i n Gallagher, who is based in Mill Street, revealed the two badly injured men were taken to the town’s Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment to their wounds.

He said: “Police were called to reports of a disturbance in Springbank Road at 00.19am on Saturday where a 38- year- old suffered a serious hand injury following an assault.

“While attending that incident, a 36-year-old man with head injuries appeared from a nearby close.

“The two incidents were unrelated.

“As officers attempted to establish how the men had been injured, a cannabis cultivation was discovered at an address in the street.”

He added: “With regards to the first incident, police are following a positive line of enquiry.

“However, officers are trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the second incident, which left a man with lacerations to his head and face.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101.”
