Sports day fun is fab

-

What a joy it is to see all the lovely pictures of school sports days in the Express.

The looks on the children’s faces are priceless.

It’s fantastic to see them having fun while enjoying a bit of exercise and competition, without taking it too seriously.

Sport is a great thing for kids to be involved in, and your pictures brought back so many memories from my own school days, and my attempts to master the three-legged race.

To this day, I recall belting up and down the playground with my classmate at Craigends Primary, in Linwood (now Woodlands), determined to coordinate our stride.

Neither of us were sporty and we were never going to be future Olympians, however, we had great fun and it’s one of the fondest memories I have of my schooldays.

Good luck to all the kids taking part in sports days this summer, and keep the great pictures coming. Name and address supplied

Falseeconomy

As a parent of two children with autism I am deeply concerned that a health trust in London is considering no longer diagnosing young people.

Their justification is that schools can deal with the issues.

For a start, children with autism will grow up and many will still require support. Those living with autism will explain how a holistic approach is required and how important early intervention is.

I am grateful for the support my family has, but I am concerned more people are reporting they need a formal diagnosis to get help. What will happen to these families?

Not diagnosing a condition does not mean it does not exist. What conditions will be next?

Yes, our society has a responsibility to be ASD friendly, but also to offer the services that are required. Invest in the early years and make savings later on. After all autism is a life-long condition.

Is this about saving money? Probably, but this is the wrong approach to take as are cuts to all services available to people living with disabilities.

I hope our own NHS services are never required to consider such an option.

Fight for our NHS and the services it offers, justified by need not for financial savings. Investment in services saves money in the long term.

I am thinking too of clinicians and workers caught up in such difficult decisions who may experience the fallout. We all want the best for our children. Sandra Webster Scottish Socialist Party
