Saints will battle to keep Ross

Board poised to fight off approach from Dundee

- Craig Ritchie Jack Ross

St Mirren look set to pull out all the stops to hang on to manager Jack Ross after the club was officially approached by Dundee yesterday afternoon.

The 40- year- old was installed as the bookies’ favourite hours after it was confirmed that interim Dee boss Neil McCann would not be extending his stay on Monday.

And Express Sport understands that Tayside chiefs have now backed up their interest by inquiring about Ross’ services.

Local news outlets in the City of Discovery have reported that Ross is the number one target of the Dundee board, who are said to be impressed with the way Ross masterminded St Mirren’s survival from the clutches of relegation last season.

But reports of a £20,000 buy- out clause in Ross’ Saints cont ract are believed to be unfounded.

Ross is currently on holiday and will not be returning until early next week, with rumours about his future set to rumble on until at least Monday.

The former Alloa manager has been a revelation since taking the hotseat in October, with a stunning end to the campaign seeing St Mirren avoid the relegation playoffs on the final day of the season.

He was recognised with Manager of the Month awards for the final two months of the season, with his side drawing praise from the likes of Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers and Hibernian boss Ne i l Lennon following impressive performances against the two high-flying sides.

Other names in the mix for the Dens Park job include Ross County’s Jim McIntyre, Hibs’ Scottish Cup winning manager Alan Stubbs, and Morton boss Jim Duffy.

The approach for Ross will be met with resistance by the St Mirren hierachy, with Ross building his squad for next season following the additions of Ross Stewart, Jordan Kirkpatrick and Gregor Buchanan.
