Shoppers stunned by High Street car
An elderly driver stunned shoppers and town centre workers yesterday afternoon when she drove her blue car straight through Paisley’s pedestrianised streets.
The woman drove from the area around Gilmour Street Station, along County Square, past pubs and shops to the war memorial – where she turned right on to High Street.
Once on High Street, she slowly drove past people who were out for a stroll enjoying the sunshine – and narrowly missed a few of them.
With an elderly male passenger sitting next to her, she carried on up the High Street, past the YMCA towards Renfrewshire-Wide Credit Union.
An astonished onlooker told the Express:“She drove right down the pedestrian-only zone and back on to the road at the top of New Street, where a big bus was coming up the hill just at the credit union.
“She appears to have clipped the bus slightly, but just kept driving.
“It was really busy as it was sunny, so it was quite dangerous. People walking around were doubletaking at the sight of this old dear driving along, seemingly blissfully unaware.”
The drama took place just after 3.20pm yesterday and one man who spotted the scene unfolding added:“Someone’s clearly not reading traffic signs. That’s ridiculous. There are very clear pedestrianonly signs the whole way up the road.”
