It’s good news for walkers and cyclists

- Lynn Jolly

A £160,000 revamp of a vital National Cycle route in Paisley has been carried out to improve the network for cyclists and wakers.

Sustrans Scotland has just completed the project, which seen 1.7km of The National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 7 and Route 75 getting a facelift.

The section running from Paisley’s Main Road to the Lounsdale Road ramp by Craw Road has been resurfaced and widened as part of the upgrade.

In addition to the main path being resurfaced, improvements have also been made to the access ramp at Maxwellton Road and Lounsdale Road has been widened and made more accessible.

The upgrade has made the route safer and more accessible for residents to walk or cycle along and it is hoped that it will encourage more people to go out for a stroll or hop on their bike for local trips.

Ross Miller, an engineer at Sustrans Scotland, said: “Route 7/ 75 is a key access point for Paisley residents and visitors and we are pleased that this upgrade has happened.

“During the works, feedback from path users was great and they welcomed the improvements.

“We hope it will make it easier for more people to walk and cycle for more of the journeys they make every day.”

As well as being a key route for commuters, route 7 forms two thirds of the famous Sea to Sea (C2C) cycle route, which links Sunderland and Inverness.

This means the route is used by a high number of people walking and cycling along it, particularly during the summer months.

Sustrans Scotland’s National Cycle Network route improvements fund is funded by Transport Scotland and the charity’s main aim is to make it easier for people to walk and cycle.

A spokesman added: “We connect people and places, create liveable neighbourhoods, transform the school run and deliver a happier, healthier commute.”
