Cabbie makes OAP’s football dream come true

Willie takes Margaret to see Celtic

- Gavin McInally

A football- daft great granny finally got to see her heroes in the flesh ... after a big-hearted cabbie discovered she’d never been to a match.

Margaret Tosh, from Glenburn, yesterday revealed she’ll “die a happy woman” after seeing Celtic lift the league trophy during her surprise day out.

Renfrewshire Cabs driver Willie Queen organised the touching gesture after the 78- year- old Buddie told him she’d never seen the Glasgow giants live from the stands.

True to his word, he collected Margaret from her home and took her on a dream day out to see Celtic beat Hearts before lifting the league silverware.

Margaret told the Paisley Daily Express the trip to the stadium dubbed ‘Paradise’ was even better than she had imagined.

She said: “It was such a smashing day, I couldn’t believe it. If I died tomorrow, I’d die a happy woman after going to see Celtic.

“I’ve always loved the team, but my family are all Rangers fans so I never had the chance before to go and see them live.

“When Willie told me he’d come and pick me up, I thought he was pulling my leg. Why would anyone take me to a game?

“But when he did, I was so happy. I couldn’t stop hugging him afterwards, I was just so delighted about being able to enjoy such a smashing day.”

She added: “I would like to say a big thank-you to Willie – what he did meant the world to me.”

Kind-hearted Willie, 58, said it was a pleasure to take his regular passenger on a new journey.

He said: “All I did was take her to a game, but you could see what it meant to Mrs Tosh. She told me she was so excited by it all that she couldn’t sleep afterwards, so I’m glad she enjoyed it.”

Renfrewshire Cabs manager, Hannah McCulloch, said she was “proud” to call Willie Queen one of the company’s drivers.

She added: “Mrs Tosh has been a customer of ours for years and years and she always has a bit of banter with our drivers, no matter who they support.

“But when Willie found out that at the age of 78, she still hadn’t seen Celtic play live, he arranged that for her. It was a lovely gesture and it was much appreciated by Mrs Tosh who had such a fabulous exciting day she couldn’t sleep on Sunday night.”
