It looks like Ross will still be the boss

- Jack Ross has been deep in thought about his future

Should he stay or should he go now? Well it looks like he has made up his mind.

As the alarm clock rang each morning this week, a cursory glance of social media has been with trepidation in the hope that Jack Ross hasn’t packed in the Saints overnight.

So far, the main man himself remains St Mirren’s manager – and if yesterday’s statement was anything to go by then it looks like he is committed to the cause. It’s been a tricky week for St Mirren. No more so because it has been 30 long years since the club last had a manager deemed good enough to be headhunted in the shape of Alex Miller.

A scary record, it just goes to prove the miraculous job that Ross has managed to conduct in such a short space of time – not that you need to tell anyone affiliated with St Mirren that.

With great success comes great interest from elsewhere and it has to be said that it was just a matter of time before someone came calling, Dundee or otherwise.

St Mirren’s swift rejection of their original offer quickly pinned Saints’ colours to the mast.

And it was made all the more remarkable when you consider pretty much everyone on the St Mirren roll call seems to be on their holidays.

Phone companies across the land will have revelled in the constant speculation, with conference calls between Jack and the St Mirren board racking up at least three different nations.

The big question, however, remained unanswered for so long.

St Mirren didn’t want him to go, but did Jack want to stay?

Well after a few days of headache inducing silence he finally told Dundee to bolt.. and not to let the door smack them on the way out.

The appeal of Dundee is sure to be one that will have caught his eye.

At the end of the day, if had made the switch then he would surely have seen a significant increase in dough.

No matter what business you are in, if someone is offering a significant wage bump then you are always going to be interested in at least seeing what they have to say.

But it looks like it is going to be a best of both worlds for both JR and St Mirren.

Saints look set to table a new deal that will see him extend his stay and bolster his coffers.

And from a fans point of view his playing budget is also going to be boosted in a bid to help him coax some new players through the doors and into a potential promotion-chasing squad for next season.

Choosing Dundee would have meant that he would have taken a year’s shortcut to the top flight. And anyone that has spent five minutes with Jack would understand just how ambitious and driven he is to make himself a success.

If he had seen Dundee as the vessel to do that, then fair enough. But thankfully it appears that the good ship St Mirren is his cruiseline of choice as Saints prepare to set off for Destination Premiership.

Jack and James Fowler are onto something good here. That fact cannot be denied. He said the day he got the job that this was a project and, three years down the line at the end of his original contract, he would like to have taken St Mirren back to where they once were, when he was at the club as a player.

To be fair, he also wanted to get promoted last season, but that didn’t work out as he planned.

But the way that Saints finished the season, it is hard not to get excited about the potential this side has.

Having followed the club for as long as I can remember, and covering them for the best part of three years, never has the excitement around the club been this high.

There is a genuine buzz about matchdays and a sense of anticipation ahead of the new season.

Keep going the way he is going and Jack will have more than just Dundee knocking at his door.

And a move to the likes of Aberdeen or the likes is one that even the most battleworn of supporters would struggle to grudge.
