Nursing home assistant accused of mistreating OAPs

- Gavin McInally

A care home assistant is facing disciplinary action after being accused of shouting at a vulnerable pensioner “do you want to end up in hospital?”

Gillian Smyth, who worked at Braemount Nursing Home, in Paisley, faces several charges of abusing and manhandling a resident over a five-year period.

It’s alleged that she repeatedly shouted at the pensioner – referred to as AA – pulled or pushed the OAP into a chair, and caused distress.

During an outburst, it’s claimed Smyth yelled at AA: “Do you want to end up in hospital?”

A separate charge states that another resident – known as BB – was warned that he would have his buzzer taken off him if he kept pressing it and was told “no” when he requested assistance.

And in another complaint, it’s claimed that Smyth told a third pensioner – CC – that “you don’t need the toilet” when she asked for help to reach the loo.

The allegations will be heard at a Notice of Fitness to Practise Panel hearing to be held between Monday, June 12, and Friday, June 16, at Scottish Social Services Council in Dundee.

A report detailing the complaints stated that if they are found proven, Smyth could be struck off the register.

It added: “The allegations against you are that while employed as a care assistant by BUPA Care Homes at Braemount Nursing Home, and during the course of that employment, you did repeatedly shout at resident AA stating that she should “sit down” or words to that effect, shout at AA “do you want to end up in hospital” or words to that effect, repeatedly pull or push AA back into a chair, and your actions caused AA to stumble and caused distress to AA.

“You did state to resident BB in a raised voice “if you keep pressing the buzzer, I will take it off you” or words to that effect, state to BB in a raised voice “no” or words to that effect when he buzzed for assistance.

“You did deny resident CC’s requests to go to the bathroom stating “you don’t need the toilet” or words to that effect and in light of the above your fitness to practise is impaired because of your misconduct as set out in allegations one to four.”
