Relegation was never an option, insists Clark

-

Renfrew co- boss Colin Clark insists he never believed his side would be relegated — despite being rock bottom in November.

The Frew completed their objective of beating the drop last weekend, even though they suffered a last day defeat at the hands of promoted Girvan.

They finished comfortably in mid-table, but their final position fails to tell the whole story, according to their gaffer.

Clark told Express Sport: “It might look like we never had the best of seasons, but, for us, avoiding the drop was all we ever targeted.

“You have to consider where we were before we went on the run that moved us up the league.

“The boys have to be given credit for where they managed to end up.

“There were games where we should have played better, but at the start of the year we just weren’t getting the rub of the green that we probably deserved.

“It would have been easy for their heads to drop at times, but, credit to them, they stuck to their task well.

“The way they approached games and the way they were playing, even when they were losing, meant I always believed they would stay up.

“Finally, it all clicked into place for us and we got the points our play warranted.”

With one eye on next season, Clark insists he won’t be making any bold predictions as to where he expects his side to finish.

The Super League First Division’s four relegation spots means that it will always be a case of safety first.

Clark added: “We want to progress, but the first target is always ensuring you get enough points to keep you safe.

“Then you can start targeting up the league and seeing where your form can take you.”
