Pupils are on a high after visit from astronaut
Competition winner congratulated by Steve
A NASA astronaut touched down ahead of a space camp to design an experiment to be blasted into orbit.
American Steve Swanson, 56, was greeted by pupils from Rashielea Primary ahead of the Mission Discovery Renfrewshire launch.
He paid a special visit to P7 Kane Flynn, who won a competition to design a new badge for the project.
Mha i r i Peden, depute headteacher at the Erskine school, says the visit was out of this world.
She added: “Kane is a keen artist and was inspired by the previous designs and particularly interested in the shape of the International Space Station.
“He h o p e s to study palaeontology when he is older and has a keen interest in anything scientific.
“Kane was delighted to meet Steve and found what he had to say about his time in space fascinating.”
Steve has flown two shuttle flights, logged over 643 hours offplanet and completed four space walks.
He joined the classes ahead of the week-long Mission Discovery Renfrewshire scheme.
It sees 200 children moving into S4 from across Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde work together to create a science project to be sent into space.
It is hosted by the University of the West of Scotland and run by astronauts, astronaut trainers, scientists and NASA leaders.
It aims to boost leadership qualities among the teams, encourage them to work together and foster an interest in science and research.
The winning entry will be tested on the International Space Station.
Mission Discovery Renfrewshire runs until June 9.
