Nursery tots brush up on dental health

- Chris Taylor

09.06.2017 These tots were grinning from ear to ear when they learned all about the importance of brushing their teeth.

Douglas Street Pre-Five Centre was bristling with activity during the special bash for Childsmile Week.

Youngsters took turns to scrub the fangs of mascot Mike the Dragon during the healthy living session.

Christine Gilbert, Childsmile coordinator for the nursery, had the children joining in with games.

She said: “It’s very important we teach the kids how to look after themselves.

“Dental health in Scotland hasn’t always been the best, so it’s vital we get them interested as early as possible.

“We gave them giant brushes and they made sure the teddy was well looked after. We want them to learn good habits that they will carry on for the rest of their lives.

“Enjoying games and songs is the best way for wee ones to learn and they’re having fun while they do it.”

Childsmile runs across the country and promotes regular dentist visits and provides advice on how to keep mouths healthy.

A spokesman said: “Good oral health in childhood means healthy teeth and gums throughout life.

“Childsmile is working to ensure all children, regardless of income or background, have the best possible start.”
