Wish list trio for gaffer

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren are still on the hunt for at least another three players, according to manager Jack Ross.

The Championship side are currently trying to piece together their squad for next season.

Ross has already added to the playing ranks, with the addition of Albion Rovers duo Ross Stewart and Ross Stewart, Alloa Athletic’s Jordan Kirkpatrick and Dumbarton’s Gregor Buchanan.

But, with a target squad size of around 22 in mind, Ross reckons he is still a few pieces of the jigsaw away from having everything in place ahead of pre-season training kicking off on Thursday, June 15.

Two defenders and a striker are the very least Ross has in mind.

Ross told Express Sport: “Jamie Langfield has signed a new contract but he will be focusing his attention on the coaching side of things, as opposed to playing.

“I feel we would benefit from another defender, while a forward and a wide man is something that we would like to get sorted too.

“All going well, we will have a squad of around 22, so there is still a little bit of work to do between now and pre-season getting started but things are starting to shape up well.”

One player that Ross admits he is still keen to bring to the club is Dundee striker Rory Loy.

The 29-year-old enjoyed a fruitful spell on loan from the Premiership side over the course of the second half of last season, arriving on a temporary switch during the January transfer window.

Loy would have the desired impact, scoring in the Irn-Bru Cup final defeat to Dundee United, as well as the goal against Hibernian on the last day of the season that saved the Saints’ skin.

Ross admits that there is still work to be done, but says he hasn’t given up hope that Loy will once again pull on the black and white stripes next season.

He added: “Rory has his own situation to deal with, and obviously Neil McCann will have a million things on his plate right now.

“I know Neil well, and I’m hopeful that if Rory is to move on then we can make him an offer.”

All going well, we will have a squad of 22, so there is still a bit of work to do between now and pre-season Jack Ross
