A Paisley school has gone to the top of the class.

Todholm Primary scooped the Raising Attainment though Literacy award at this year’s Scottish Education Awards.

Organisers said judges were impressed with the school’s approach to literacy by encouraging children to get involved with reading challenges, sponsored reads, book drives and story clubs throughout the year.

And Paisley’s Kersland School also took home the prestigious Transforming Lives through Partnerships award for their work with Park Mains High.

The schools have worked together on a number of projects, including the delivery of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, in which eight pupils from Kersland achieved the highest Gold Award.

Lynne McGinn, headteacher at Todholm Primary, said:“We have made a concerted effort to focus on literacy and family learning in recent years through our work with Strathclyde University and our literacy approach.

“Through this, we have delivered a number of initiatives aimed at developing a love of reading in our pupils, such as Jump into Reading for Early Years, Bedtime Story Club and Primary Two Reading Café.

“We were also spurred on by winning Renfrewshire’s Summer Reading Challenge.”

The Scottish Education Awards recognise and reward the people who dedicate their lives to children and young people.
