Young golf star shines on the green
Aidan adds Scottish Schools title to list of wins
It has been a busy few weeks on the course for Renfrewshire youngster Aidan O’Hagan.
The Old Ranfurly Golf Club member has been in stunning form around the greens at a host of events, cementing himself as one of the brightest talents in the whole country.
A tournament victory and a close call are just the latest exploits for the talented youngster who continues to catch the eye.
O’Hagan’s success came as he lifted the individual scratch title at the Scottish Schools Championships at Murrayshall, near Perth.
Two rounds of 71 were enough to take the title with a total of 142, finishing a comfortable four shots ahead of boys’ section runners-up, Sebastian Sandin, of Stirling, and Lewis Irvine, from Glasgow. The pair both enjoyed rounds of 75 and 71 for 14, but it wasn’t enough to catch O’Hagan.
In the girls’ section, Louise Duncan of North Ayrshire took the title with a total of 145.
Meanwhile, O’Hagan came close to taking another title at the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy as he led going into the final round of action.
Scores of 71 and 73 had the youngster in the lead heading into the final day of play, but he was beaten at the finish by Inverallochy’s Marc Watt, who produced a stunning final round of four- under par, at Macdonald Cardrona Golf Resort near Peebles.
Watt’s score of 68 was enough to finished with an overall score of 215, while O’Hagan could only manage a round of 78 to wind up in overall third place.
A 10-shot swing was enough for the Buchan boy to take the title, while Lewis Irvine of Kirkhill stormed into second place, thanks to three steady rounds of 73, 73 and 74.
In the girls’ Vase event , professional’s daughter Jillian Farrell, of Cardross, a beaten semifinalist in the Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship at Royal Aberdeen this week, survived a lastround slump to an 80 after earlier scores of 73 and 76 to win by two strokes with a 10-over-par total of 229.
