Smart new flats plan for derelict nightclub

Building will be razed to the ground if move is approved

Liberty’s nightclub will be torn down and replaced with flats under new plans.

Nixon Blue wants to build 32 two- bedroom homes on the grounds of the derelict boozer.

Architects Jewitt and Wilkie have submitted blueprints to Renfrewshire Council setting out proposals for the riverside site.

It stated: “The proposed development of 32 flats is in a central location with a large provision of local amenities and public transport links that we feel justify the 50 per cent car parking proposed.

“The site’s current use is a public house and nightclub, however, these properties are both derelict and vacant.

“There are views along and across the water, with an abundance of amenities and transport links that are all within short walking distance.

“We proposed to encourage a more sustainable means of transportation including a 100 per cent provision of cycle storage for the residents.

“The detailed development proposals for the site will respond to the needs and aspirations of the future residents.

“With such a sustainable location, the site is greatly suited towards a modern residential development.”

Liberty’s closed more than 10 years ago, with the building put on the market earlier last year for offers over £80,000.

The rectangular 1,850m2 Old Sneddon Street plot borders the White Cart, just yards from Paisley’s main train station.

The development would bring the site back into use as Renfrewshire Council presses ahead with regeneration of areas surrounding the rail line.

Planners have drawn up a 10year plan to improve the region’s fortunes.

They want to bring arches under the rail bridge into use, with popup bars, shops and restaurants.

Alasdair Morrison, head of regeneration for Renfrewshire Council, previously admitted there are too many vacant sites behind the terminal.

He told how new homes will attract businesses to serve arriving families.

A decision on the planning application is expected in August.
