Art show will be picked by public

Random Selection display for museum

- Kenneth Speirs

16.06.2017 Paisley Museum is inviting individuals and groups to help ‘paint the picture’ of its amazing collection of artwork.

Bosses at the High Street venue are asking a selection of people to choose a painting that appeals to them from a list of 120.

Dubbed ‘Random Selection’, the chosen paintings will then make up an exhibition at the museum that will open in early July.

The museum is keen to hear people’s views on its collection – which is very large and cannot be displayed all at once – and is just as keen to involve as wide a range of pickers as possible.

Paisley Museum management body Renfrewshire Leisure has contacted community groups, and members of the public have been sent an email with the selection attached as thumbnail images.

They can then choose a painting they like and write a 50- word caption for it.

Paisley Museum’s John Pressly is putting the show together.

“We started off by asking staff to choose, then we decided to widen it and ask a larger selection of people to pick,” he said.

The selection has been limited to 120 works that are easily accessible from storage at the museum, rather than at its depositories elsewhere.

And people will be given full rein to say why they have chosen particular works for the show.

John Pressly added: “It’s a case of ‘ I want to see that painting, and here’s why I want to see that painting’.”

People will even get the chance to say if they dislike a painting on the list of 120.

The show has a lengthy run, starting on Thursday, July 6, and closing on Sunday, September 25, during museum opening hours which are 11am to 4pm, from Tuesday to Saturday and from 2pm to 5pm, on Sundays.
