We’ve got league title in our pockets

Paisley side crowned Second Division darts champions

- Craig Ritchie

Pockets Red were the toast of the town after clinching the Paisley and District Darts League Second Division title.

Led by Paisley and District ladies champion Laura Grant, the side got the two points they needed to take the title after defeating their clubmates Pockets Black 7-2 with the loss of only six legs on the night.

The win gives the Reds the title by four points from Gleniffer Hotel, who travelled to Hazel Arms knowing that nothing less than a win would give them the second automatic promotion place.

They started the game off well racing into a 3-0 lead before being pegged back to 3-2. The last of the singles matches went to Gleniffer in a thrilling five leg match to give the visitors a two game advantage at 4-2.

Hazel Arms reduced the deficit to only one match as they won the first of the doubles before Gleniffer finally won the match in the second doubles match.

With the last match going to the home team the final score ended up 5-4 to Gleniffer Hotel to give them the division runners-up spot.

Cafuffals were also on the hunt for the runners-up spot, but they couldn’t get the result they needed as they went down 5-4 to The Kelburn with the loss meaning that although they have the same points as Gleniffer Hotel, they lose out on the second place because of a leg difference of eight games.

The result also gives Hazel Arms fifth place in the division but only by a leg difference of one from Inkerman BC as they suffered a 7-2 defeat at the hands of Tartan Rose with the win keeping the West End team in seventh place.

The bottom of the table clash at Flying Horse between their B team and Keystone B ended up in a 7-2 win for the visiting team with the result cementing their eighth place.

In the First Division, Hagg Bar A sought to retain their grip on the title as they took on fourth placed Pickwicks, who had already beaten the Johnstone team this season.

The home team were in no mood to give up their lead in the table and they rattled off game after game to lead 6-0 after the singles games, with every Hagg player winning at least one game in six throws.

They continued to pile on the pressure in the doubles and ended up with a final 8-1 result.

St Peter’s recorded the exact same 8-1 score against Burgh Bar to keep up their hopes of prising the title from their Johnstone rivals, but Hagg Bar A can’t be caught even with a St Peter’s victory when they meet in the last games of the season next Monday.

In the bottom half of the table, Flying Horse reinforced their sixth place with a 7-2 win over Arthurlie Inns, with the defeat putting the Arthurlie team into a relegation spot.

Court Bar also made sure they would stay clear in seventh place as they had a very narrow 5-4 victory against the bottom placed team Keystone A. The loss now means that Keystone A will be relegated.

There were six maximums recorded in the games bringing the season’s overall total to 250 with 104 players hitting at least one.

The highest amount of 180s came from Hagg Bar A captain Evander Stevenson with a personal total of 16.

There were 12 games finished in 18 darts or under with nine of those coming from the Hagg Bar A team. These 12 games bring the season’s total to 381 legs of darts finished in 18 darts or less.

The quickest game of the season was an 11 dart leg, again from Evander Stevenson.

Finishing was also of a very high standard with the best being a 154 from Court Bar’s Paul Carruthers. During the season there were 150 finishes over 100, with the best of the year being a 161 checkout from St Peter’s captain Andy Callary.
