Paisley duo are cleared of murder attempt

-

Two Paisley men were yesterday cleared of a shooting outside at primary school.

William Burns, 5 6 , and Alexander Porter, 48, denied attempting to murder 35- year- old Ross Sherlock by repeatedly discharging a handgun at him on September 24, 2015, at Dornoch Place and Ronaldsay Drive, Bishopbriggs.

This was said to have happened as pupils left for the day.

Yesterday, judge Lord Matthews formally acquitted Burns and Porter of the shooting murder bid.

Lord Matthews told the jury: “I have ruled that there is insufficient evidence against the accused.”

Mr Sherlock, who was at St Helen’s Primary, to collect his daughter, was shot at three times with a handgun by a man wearing a yellow fluorescent jacket.

One of the bullets hit his right arm and broke it.

He ran off and the gunman was seen getting into a silver Volkswagen Golf ,which was discovered about 3.30pm on fire in Wood Lane, Bishopbriggs.

A number of other parents, who were also picking up their children, gave evidence at the High Court in Glasgow.

None of them could identify the gunman or the getaway driver.

Burns and Porter are still on trial at the High Court in Glasgow accused of a doorstep acid attack on journalist Russell Findlay in Glasgow’s Jordanhill on December 23, 2015.

They deny the charge and the trial continues.
