Reveller smashed car to get attention

-

A teenager who got lost and disorientated in a town 20 miles away from his home smashed a car up — landing him in court.

Callum Gibson, 19, from Cumbernauld, had been at an all-night party with friends and became separated from them after leaving the house in Barrhead at 8am on March 5.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard how he became frustrated when motorists he tried to flag down for help ignored him.

In his highly booze-fuelled state, he picked up a brick and smashed the window of the parked car in Darnley Road to attract attention.

Local residents saw what he did and reported the matter to police, who arrived minutes later.

The court was told he waited at the scene for officers to arrive and confessed he had acted in a wilful and reckless manner deliberately to attract their attention.

Defence agent Peter Galletly conceded it was a “bizarre” case that had come about as his client had been drinking.

After walking aimlessly for some distance, Gibson realised he had left his mobile phone and wallet behind and had no money or any way of contacting anyone.

In his drunken state, he became frustrated as it seemed that no- one was helping him.

Mr Galletly said: “He wanted to attract the attention of police and he waited for them to arrive after acting as described.

“In the cold light of day, he appreciates he could just as easily gone to someone’s door to seek help, but in his drunken state he wasn’t thinking straight.

“He has written various letters of apology.”

Sheriff Susan Sinclair was told Gibson had recently found himself work with a security firm.

It was also explained that the damages bill of £500 was more than the vehicle was worth, so it was scrapped.

She ordered Gibson to pay that amount in compensation to the owner at £10 per week.
