Takeaway plan for former Hateley pub

Proposal submitted to council in bid to transform bar

- Chris Taylor

23.06.2017 A former pub owned by retired football star Mark Hateley could be turned into a takeaway.

MJK Architects has submitted plans to split the boozer into an office and food shop.

The ex-Rangers ace, 55, was forced to pull down the shutters at the bar which bore his name after just 18 months of trading.

A planning application lodged with Renfrewshire Council sets out plans to change the use of the Renfrew building.

Blueprints submitted by the designers include the project name ‘Highland Star’.

A Chinese restaurant and takeaway with the same name had operated in nearby Dunlop Crescent for decades, but closed last year.

The owners set up another food business in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, but vowed to return to the area.

Owners also want to set up a financial services office in the Fulbar Street building.

Hateley’s had two large seating areas, with toilets in each section, a large cellar and kitchen facilities.

The proposals are to turn the lounge bar into an office and the public bar into a takeaway.

The pub was targeted by sneak thieves, who made off with £10,000 in takings, just months after opening.

Raiders forced their way inside in the hours after an Old Firm clash and grabbed cash from behind the bar in 2008.

Families living next to the business in Fulbar Street were wakened at around 4.30am when they heard an alarm going off

Staff pulled down the shutters for good within a year.

Hateley, who had two playing spells in Glasgow, notching up 169 appearances between 1990 and 1997, blamed the economic crash for the closure.

He told then how the downturn had put strain on the business and it had become “unsustainable”.

The bar, which had previously operated as Simon’s, had been put on the market for offers over £75,000 after it was shut in 2009.

A decision on the proposal is expected in August.
