Bowling along
Pupils hit the green for fun day out
Rain certainly didn’t stop play as the primary six class from Springhill and Auchenback Primary took part in a taster session at Arthurlie Bowling Club.
After seeing their last two planned visits called off, the rain wasn’t going to dampen the Barrhead kids’ enthusiasm as they were shown the ropes by club coaches and members.
Keith White, one of the main players behind the scheme, explained the background,
He told the Paisley Daily Express: “The club have been running the schools programme for more than 10 years and organise taster sessions and after school clubs at Arthurlie, Springhill and Auchenback, Carlibar and St Mark’s.
“This is followed up by visits to the club by the schools.
“Recently we hosted a competition involving all the secondary schools in East Renfrewshire and another is scheduled for the Barrhead primary schools.”
Several of those involved now regularly attend coaching courses at the club.
Over the years the club has been able to build a vibrant and successful junior section, having won several outside competitions including the Scottish Cup for two years in succession, and last year scooped the Govan Junior League title.
In the past they won the Johnstone and District league and singles titles on more than one occasion.
On an individual basis, they have had appearances at the Scottish National finals and winners of the SYBA ( Scottish Young Bowlers Association) district competitions.
Within the club, juniors have gone on to win several cups and some have graduated to represent the club at adult level.
Arthurlie is the only bowling club in Barrhead with a junior section and ages range from eight-years-old to 19.
Youngsters are encouraged to come along to the club on Fridays after school and Saturday mornings when they are put through their paces by fully qualified Scottish Bowling association
