Pupil wins award for achieving 100 per cent attendance

- Colette Crampsey

A Paisley schoolboy has been rewarded for achieving an impressive 100 per cent attendance during his entire time at school.

Calum Brannan, 12, received a headteacher’s award during a special assembly at St Mary’s Primary for never missing a day of classes in his seven years as a student.

The bright youngster was also awarded a £100 gift voucher for Braehead shopping centre by the school for his fantastic efforts.

Calum’s proud parents, Derek Brannan and Anne Breckenridge, surprised him by turning up to the end-of-term award celebration at the school, applauding their son for the special achievement.

It was the first time in decades that St Mary’s has seen a pupil manage 100 per cent attendance, so the award was certainly rare.

Acting depute head Jennifer Bannigan hailed Calum for the impressive clean sweep.

She told us: “It’s quite a feat . I’ve taught at this school for eight years and the headteacher has been here for around 11 years, but this is the first time we have ever seen a pupil achieve 100 per cent attendance.

“It’s very rare, so we decided to mark it was a special school assembly, inviting Calum’s parents in as a surprise for him to award him.

“They were delighted and very proud of their son, who has proven himself to be very determined and driven.”

Calum will be moving on to St Andrew’s High, in Paisley, after the summer.

Mrs Bannigan wished him all the best in the future on behalf of the school.

She added: “Calum is a great pupil and a very hard-working boy.

“St Mary’s will be sad to see him go, but I’m sure he’ll do very well at high school.”

Fordbank Primary pupil, Liam McInteer, 12, was also awarded for achieving 100 per cent attendance earlier in the week.

The Johnstone boy had promised his gran Jeanette Potter that he would never miss a day of school before she sadly passed away in 2010 after battling cancer.

He kept his promise and was presented with an award at a school assembly for his excellent efforts.

Liam will start at Johnstone High after the summer, where his grandmother taught for several years as principal teacher of pastoral care.
