It’s a new chapter for publishing in Paisley

Clocoderick Press launches with help from 2021 fund

- Kenneth Speirs

29.06.2017 A new literary publishing house has been set up in Paisley.

Clochoderick Press got off the ground with a £ 5,000 grant through the Paisley 2021 campaign and will publish poetry by Buddies and beyond.

Named after Clochoderick Stone, in Lochwinnoch, the publishing house has been set up by well-known Paisley literary figures R K Wallace, Fiona Lindsay and Kathryn Metcalfe.

Mr Wallace said: “We are a non-profit literary organisation, which aims to promote literary excellence by those who are under-represented.

“We offer four platforms for aspiring writers — a bi-annual literary journal, Laldy!, an annual poetry competition, publication of individual collections and live events.

“We are a group of writers who started off running an open mic event for those interested in reading their creative work, and from there we decided to put Paisley on the map regarding what it harnesses in terms of literature.

“We published a pilot version of Laldy! in 2016 which became a local success.

“We then started to work with Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival, as well as Scottish Pen.

“It was late 2016 we decided to set up a platform for the wider community of unrecognised literature thriving not just locally, but all over the UK and beyond.

“We also do workshops with adults and older children in order to introduce those with potential to the world of publishing.”

Clochoderick Press, which won the 2021 grant under the name Round Table Writers, has launched a poetry competition that offers a £500 first prize, £200 for second prize, and £ 100 for third prize. The writers of four commended poems will each receive £50.

The press will be holding an open mic night on the first Tuesday of the month, starting on July 4, at the Bianco Nero function suite at 5 St James Street, Paisley.

As well as poetry, the event is open to other artistic acts such as short comedy pieces, short drama pieces, dancing, music. There will be a piano available for anyone who wishes to play.

There is a fee of £ 3, which includes sandwiches, tea, coffee, and cakes.

The deadline for submissions is January 25, 2018.

It was announced earlier this week that Paisley’s very own musical megastar Paolo Nutini has announced an exclusive oneoff homecoming charity show in the stunning surroundings of Paisley Abbey.

The gig will see superstar Paolo backing the town’s UK City of Culture 2021 bid.

The show — on Friday, October 20 — tops the bill for Paisley’s annual Spree festival, and is taking place in support of a number of local good causes.

Only a limited number of golddust tickets will be available to the public for the 550-capacity venue.

Fans will be able to register via thespree.co.uk from Friday for a chance to get the option to purchase a pair.

All ticket proceeds will go to five local charities selected by Paolo himself — The Love Street Singers, Mirren Park School, The Kibble Band, the Sunshine Recovery Cafe and some of the town’s Syrian refugee children.

Paisley is bidding to be UK City of Culture 2021 as part of wider plans to transform the town’s future using its unique cultural and heritage story.

Bids were submitted to the UK Government in April and a decision on the shortlist for the next stage is due over the summer. The winner will be announced at the end of the year.

The full bill is available at thespree.co.uk

Tickets for Paolo’s show cost £30 each and restricted to two per person.

Ticket sales will be via an online ballot. The ballot opens at 9am on Friday and runs until Thursday, July 6.
