Buddie bags silver in Euro championships
Paisley- born athlete Lennie Waite bagged a stunning silver medal in the steeplechase at the European Team Championships.
Competing for Britain last weekend, the 31-year-old slashed a massive 19 seconds off her season’s best time at the Stadium Metropole, in Lille, France.
However, she just missed out on the qualifying time for the World Championships team trials in Birmingham in July.
The Texas-based athlete, who recently broke the UK 2,000m steeplechase record in the States, ran a well-judged race in the 3,000m steeplechase.
She finished very strongly to take second place with a time of 9: 43.33, behind runaway leader Gesa Krause, of Germany.
It was Waite’s best run of the season by around 19 seconds.
Although she missed the 9.42 qualifying time target for the World Trials, she was, however, inside the 9.50 being asked for Team Scotland for Gold Coast 2018.
She tweeted after her run: “Very pleased with my race today. I love racing for team points.”
This was the fourth time Waite had competed for the British Athletics team at these championships.
A largely developmental British Athletics selection ultimately finished in fourth place overall, missing out on third in the final event of the day — the men’s 4 x 400m relay — after being forced into a last-minute line-up change.
Fellow Scots Eilidh Doyle claimed the win in the 400m hurdles final on Saturday and there was a second places for Jake Wightman in the 1,500m race.
Germany secured the overall title to reclaim the title they won in 2014.
