Thanks for heart research funding
Figures released yesterday by the British Heart Foundation Scotland show people in Renfrewshire helped raise more than £200,000 for the charity’s life-saving research last year.
The BHF said the people of Renfrewshire have shown they are all heart, by undertaking countless fundraising activities in a bid to raise urgently needed funds for research.
Deirdre Curley, Ayrshire, Glasgow and Renfrewshire fundraising manager, said: “To raise such an incredible amount in 12 months is extraordinary.
“Pennies really do amount to pounds and so I’d like to personally thank every single person for their support.
“Money ra i s e d by community fundraisers in Scotland has helped fund the BHF’s research in to improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart and circulatory disease.
“This includes a number of new trials, led by BHF-funded researchers in Glasgow, that are looking at new treatments and approaches that could protect blood vessels and the heart from damage and reduce people’s risk of cardiovascular disease.
“Specifically Professor Rhian Touyz’s team are s t u d y i n g d a n g e ro u s molecules, which damage the inner lining and wall of blood vessels.”
Heart and circulatory disease causes more than a quarter of all deaths in Scotland, or nearly 16,000 deaths each year, the BHF says.
But thanks to the generosity of communities across the country the BHF is funding research in laboratories across Scotland that has been central to discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat heart and circulatory disease.
