Ross: We’re almost there

Saints boss is pleased with the way team is shaping up for battle

- Jack Ross David Campbell

St Mirren manager Jack Ross insists his side can afford to be patient on the transfer front, having got the bulk of their business done early.

Ross has added numerous new faces to the squad, including the likes of Jordan Kirkpatrick and Craig Samson in recent weeks.

And despite having a number of trialists still training with the club, Ross insists he won’t be rushed into making anymore signings just for the sake of it.

Despite that, the Saints boss believes he is still a couple of players short from having a completed squad ahead of the Betfred Cup campaign.

Ross told Express Sport: “I think we are in a position where we can afford to be more patient – but I would still like to bring in a couple more as quickly as possible.

“We are still in a fairly healthy position squad wise.

“I think we have more than just the basis of a squad.

“I think we are nearly there with it, though I’ve made it no secret that I would consider a couple more.”

The trialists played in yesterday’s friendly with East Fife behind closed doors and Ross revealed that he will make a decision on them before heading north for the weekend friendlies with Clachnacuddin and Nairn County.

He added: “There are players still on trial with us at the moment and they will play in a couple of the behind-closed-doors games, and we will then assess them before we head up north at the weekend.

“It’s not a case of whittling it down to the ones that we want, it is more a case of what we can do with our squad.

“It is about seeing how they would fit in and what they would give to us.

“But it allows them to get themselves into good condition and try to impress us, and if it doesn’t happen here for them, then it might get them in better condition to get a deal elsewhere.

“There are no definitives on it. We will assess them and see if it is worth their while before we head up north.”

But having been back in training for a fortnight, Ross says everything is shaping up nicely.

He said: “Training has been good and they have trained well.

“Their conditioning levels are where you would expect, and the new players have settled in very well so it’s been pleasing.

“Everything is going as well as can be expected and they have been appreciative of how everything has been set out and planned for them.

“They have known exactly what it is they have been facing and what it is they have got to do, so they know when they are in.”
