Drug yob nabbed after cops swooped Police found bags of heroin following check on addict’s car

- Ron Moore

A yob was caught with drugs stashed in his underwear after cops performed a routine car check, a court has heard.

Drug addict Thomas Bain, 36, had concealed wraps of class-A drug heroin on his body when police pulled him over at the wheel of a 17-year-old banger, a Peugeot 206 hatchback, on June 1.

Persistent offender Bain, of High Street, Johnstone, was approached by cops as he got out of his motor at a nearby car park during the vehicle check.

Fiscal depute Frank Clarke told the court: “At around 9.20pm on the evening in question the accused was seen driving the vehicle and police, who had previous knowledge of the accused, saw him park his car at the car park in Johnstone.

“They approached him and, as a result of the conversation, the accused was arrested in connection with charges relating to motoring offences and then taken to a police station for a customary search.

“Packages of powder were recovered from his genitals.

“A further 10 packages were recovered from his back passage.

“These contained brown powder, each weighing around 0.3 grams.

“The value of the drugs recovered, class A heroin, is estimated between £140 and £210.”

Defence agent Jonathan Manson told the court the accused, who was pleading guilty to motoring offences and a charge of possession with intent to supply, had been blighted with a long-term addiction to heroin.

And he urged the court consider placing Bain on a drug treatment and testing order instead of putting him behind bars.

He said: “He has been on heroin for so long. He takes three of four bags a day, sometimes not even eating.

“However, he wants to rid himself of his addiction and he knows that some people succeed it, while other people fail.

“I have told him the order is not a soft option. It is either that or jail.”

Bain, who has a lengthy record of previous convictions, pleaded guilty to driving a car without a licence, insurance or an MOT certificate.

He also admitted possession with intention to supply a controlled drug, namely heroin.

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew warned the accused: “We have been down the road of a community-based disposal before and only if you are willing to make a genuine effort will I be satisfied that this order will work.

“I have to be satisfied that you are going to comply with clinical assessments.

“I want 100 per cent attendance for appointments.”

He deferred sentence until July 21, where the accused will learn of his fate, and that he will given the order.
