It’s big money for Mooy

- Football

Aussie midfielder Aaron Mooy, who was once released by St Mirren, has completed a reported £10 million move to Huddersfield Town.

The 26-year-old becomes the most expensive Aussie footballer ever after moving from Manchester City this week.

Mooy joined the Saints in 2010 under Danny Lennon but failed to make a mark with the first team, making just 21 appearances.

He returned to his homeland with Western City Wanderers and had a spell at Melbourne City before English giants Man City snapped him up in 2016.

He was farmed out on loan to Huddersfield Town last season where he helped the Yorkshire side gain promotion to the Premier League.

He has now made the move permanent for a fee of around £8m, with add ons that could take it to £10m.

Lennon described Mooy, as the‘most gifted’player he had ever worked with.

He said:“For me, he is probably the most gifted and talented player that I have come across, but he was just a young boy while at St Mirren and he had a lot of growing up to do.”

Lennon revealed that Mooy was his most expensive signing during his four-year tenure in charge of the Buddies after the midfielder arrived for £50,000 from Bolton.

Failure to cement his spot in the first team eventually led to his departure, but he will always be remembered by supporters for netting a famous winner in the 2-1 victory over Rangers on Christmas Eve 2011 – a goal that also stands out for Lennon.

He added:“We invested a lot in of money and time in Aaron. He is the player that I paid the most money for when I was with St Mirren.

“At times it looked like he’d make the breakthrough. I will always recall the goal he scored against Rangers, but it is just a pity that we never saw more of that when he was with us.”
